In the early days of the city, the river was a place to bathe, wash and cool off. But as Melbourne grew, so did the pollution. By the 1850s, the Yarra had become increasingly contaminated, with outbreaks of diseases such as typhoid adding urgency to the need for cleaner bathing facilities.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe answer arrived on Swanston Street in 1860, when Melbourne’s first City Baths opened their doors. At a time when many homes had no private bathroom, the Baths offered somewhere safer to wash, swim and escape the grime of a growing city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe original building was eventually replaced by the grand Federation-era Melbourne City Baths we know today, which opened in 1904. Its red-brick arches, tiled halls, timber balconies and magnificent indoor pool beneath vaulted ceilings made it an impressive civic building in the heart of Melbourne.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor generations, the Baths became part of city life. Swimming lessons, early morning laps, school groups, fitness sessions and weekend swims all played out beneath those soaring ceilings. It was a place to learn to swim, keep fit, cool off and meet friends.
