A devastating fire in 1945 caused extensive damage, and decades later the theatre faced an even greater threat when it was closed in 1970 and earmarked for demolition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePublic opposition helped save the Regent, and after years of uncertainty it was eventually restored and reopened in 1996.
