Melbourne’s nickname “Marvellous Melbourne” turned to the derogatory “Marvellous Smellbourne” due to the foul odors.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo address this, a Royal Commission was formed, and in 1891, the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works established the first sewage pumping station in Spotswood. This innovation allowed sewage to be collected citywide and pumped to treatment facilities in Werribee.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eConstruction of the Spotswood Pumping Station began in 1895, taking almost two years to complete. For nearly seven decades, it managed Melbourne’s sewage until it closed in 1965.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis iconic building appeared in films like “Mad Max” and “Spotswood,” starring Anthony Hopkins.
