Melbourne Town Hall Suburban Icon Poster

Standing proudly at the corner of Swanston and Collins Streets, Melbourne Town Hall has been the city’s civic heart since opening in 1870. Designed by Joseph Reed in the French Second Empire style, its grand interiors have hosted everything from political debates and mayoral balls to concerts, celebrations and some of Melbourne’s most memorable public gatherings.

The Town Hall quickly became as much a centre of social life as it was a seat of government. Its opening was celebrated with a grand concert and mayoral ball hosted by Mayor Samuel Amess, complete with a commissioned cantata by composer Charles Horsley and poet Henry Kendall. The mayoral balls soon became must-attend events for Melbourne’s social elite.

As Melbourne’s premier concert venue, the Town Hall hosted the debut of Nellie Melba in 1884 and became a regular stage for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Its grand organ, installed in 1872 at a cost of £7,350, was a centrepiece for public recitals, while regular film screenings entertained audiences until the 1930s. In 1900, the Town Hall also hosted Soldiers of the Cross, regarded as the world’s first narrative film.

And the stories continued. When The Beatles visited Melbourne in 1964, the band received a civic reception at the Town Hall, while thousands of screaming fans gathered outside, leaving the council with more than a little to remember.

Today, Melbourne Town Hall remains a beloved city landmark, continuing its long tradition of hosting concerts, exhibitions, celebrations and civic events.

This Suburban Icons print celebrates a building that has witnessed Melbourne’s cultural and civic life for more than 150 years.
