St Kilda Astor Theatre 1936 Suburban Icon Poster

When the Astor Theatre opened its doors on Friday, 13 April 1936, it was a glamorous new cinema for St Kilda. More than 90 years later, its distinctive Art Deco architecture and famous neon sign remain almost as recognisable as they were on opening night.

Until 1967, the Astor operated as an independent suburban cinema, screening second-run films before becoming a Greek-language theatre. After closing in 1982, the theatre faced an uncertain future. Thankfully, the story didn’t end there. The Astor was restored, bringing its original colour scheme, lighting and vintage fittings back to life.

And then there’s that sign. Installed in 1936, the vertical Astor neon sign is one of Melbourne’s oldest continuously operating neon signs. It once formed part of a much larger display, with a horizontal sign spelling out ASTOR above it and a grand star crowning the whole affair. After being struck by lightning several times during the 1950s, the upper section was removed, leaving the distinctive vertical sign we know today.

The Astor continues to do what it has always done best: bringing people together for a night at the movies. Classic double features, cult favourites and new releases keep the lights glowing and the cinema alive.

A4 and A3 prints are sent flat in a rigid box mailer. A2 and A1 prints are rolled in protective paper and dispatched in a heavy-duty postal tube.

You'll receive an order confirmation email when your purchase is complete, followed by a tracking notification once your order is lodged with Australia Post.

Delivery times vary depending on your location. Once an order has been dispatched with a tracking number it cannot be redirected, cancelled or refunded due to delays outside our control.

If your order arrives damaged or is confirmed lost in transit by Australia Post, we will lodge an insurance claim and arrange a replacement. Just get in touch and we'll sort it out.

Please note our responsibility ends once Australia Post confirms successful delivery. We are unable to replace items that are lost, stolen or misplaced after delivery has been completed and photographically confirmed by the carrier.

We want you to love your artwork. As every poster is printed to order, our policy varies by size.

Damaged in transit — contact us within 48 hours of delivery with photos of the damage and packaging. We'll arrange a replacement immediately at no cost.

Change of mind — A4 & A3 — we're happy to offer an exchange or store credit within 14 days of delivery. Print must be returned in original sealed packaging. Return shipping is at your expense.

Change of mind — A2 & A1 — we don't accept returns or exchanges on large format prints. Please measure your space carefully before ordering.

Cancellations — contact us within 24 hours of placing your order. If printing has already begun we may not be able to cancel.
